On this day in 1999…
The official death toll was released by 8am. The bodies were removed from the school through the afternoon and late evening, taken to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office to be identified and autopsied. When the shooters’ bodies were brought out of the school, an unseasonable blizzard began though the day had started warm and sunny. By 5:00 PM the identities of the dead were becoming known.
A girl I went to high school with lives about 45 minutes from Littleton. She went to the Columbine memorial today, and she said up on Rebel Hill, someone left two make shift Popsicle stick crosses with Eric and Dylan’s name, and a note that said “You didn’t have to do it.” She said people left little flowers on it, until a bystander saw them and stomped on them both. This hurts my soul.
